Yaowarat

Yaowarat : Bangkok’s Chinatown

Hotels in Bangkok

The largest chinese community in Thailand, Yaowarat, or Bangkok’s Chinatown, came into existence in 1862 when King Mongkut (rama IV) instructed the construction of a new road near the Chinese community in the Sampheng area, which became rather small. The new road made it more convenient for traveling around this area.

Yaowarat Road starts at Khlong Ong Ang in the outer City Wall, near Saphan Han, and ends at wat traimit, or Wat Sam Chin. King Monkut named this new road Yaowarat.

Interestingly good Chinese restaurant offering every kind of delicacy and food are found along the two sides of Yaowarat Road. Magnificent lanterns are decorated in front of the restaurants at nighttime. Popular dishes in this area include barbecued piglet shark’s ear soup, and dimsum. It was fashionable for wealthy young men in those days to frequent Chinese restaurants there. For lower-income earners, they might have noodles, dried fish maw soup,or other dishes in the same compound.

Yaowarat was known for striptease dance in the past. Chalermburi was the most modern cinema where movies were shown every evening. Anyone wishing to have recreation might visit a tea shop there for both tea and a relaxing massage.

For generations, numerous gold shops located along this road have made a name for Yaowarat, which still retains its reputation for gold trade. Gold products here are recognized for their high standard and quality.

Today, Yaowarat remains a major economic road in Bangkok and the largest Chinese cultural center in Thailand.

Chatuchak Sunday Market : the Paradise of Shoppers and Bargaining

The Paradise of Shoppers and Bargining, Chatuchak Sunday Market refers to an expansive area fo with more 8,000 stalls selling products sourced from all parts of the country. By and standard, this is unsurpassed by any other market nationwide. Thus, it has become a natural draw for both local and foreign shoppers.

Chatuchak Sunday Market is no new market. In fact, it was founded more than 59 years age, having been established in 1984 following the official line of the government of the day under the leadership of then Prime Minister field Mashal P. Pibulsongkhram to have a local bazaar established in every province. For Bangkok, Sanam Luang was chosen as the site for the new Sunday Market. However, in 1978, Sanam Luang Sunday Market had to make way for the celebration of the Bicentenary of Bangkok and a public plaza for recreational purposes. The State Railway of Thailand thus donated for public use a plot of land in Paholyothin adjacent to the south side of Chatuchak Park. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration followed through with the clearing of the land, a phase it completed in 1981 and paved the way for the emergence of Paholyothin Sunday Market. In1987, in concurrence with the neighboring park, it was renamed Chatuchak Sunday Market, the name it is used until the present day.

The shops at Chatuchak Sunday Market are generslly opened for business on Saturday and Sunday from 10.00 a.m. – 06.00 p.m. The space is systematically divided into 27 distinct projects for specific product groups including plants antiques, pet, cooked food and beverages, fresh and dried food , ceramic ware, collectible items, household appliances, apparels, decorative ornaments and books, among others.
